Revised 2017 - Compiled by the Comanche Language and Cultural Preservation Committee

The Comanche Dictionary has been, and will continue to be, a "work in progress". It was compiled by members of the Comanche Language and Cultural Preservation Committee (CLCPC) over a period of years beginning in mid 1997. It is the first known dictionary of Comanche words put together by Comanche people.
The process of documenting each word has been a long and painstaking task, and we wanted it in a format that could be easily accessed by computer. Dr. Bill Walker, Pd.D., Professor in the Department of Mathematics, both at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, first developed a Comanche font system for our use with the help of their students, one of which was the late Michael Red Elk, son of Ronald Red Elk, co-founder of the CLCPC. James Bishop, computer consultant from Lawton, expanded on that system and developed the format we have used in printing our dictionary. He continues to be our consultant through the revison process. Dr. Daniel Gelo, University of Texas at San Antonio, helped with the "prefixes and suffixes" part of the Dictionary.
Aside from all the moder-day technologies that allowed this dream to become a reality, our gratitude goes to the Comanche speaking people, most of whom are elders. Unfortunately, many have passed away since our efforts began, but their memories live on within each of us and within the pages of this Comanche Dictionary. Many that helped on this project were "support personnel", and took care of incidental tasks. Everyone devoted many hours to help this dream become a reality for all of us.
