Comanche songs have a long history of tradition. They held the thoughts and beliefs of those who composed the songs, and with the influx of white missionaries came a surge of Christian songs.

In the 1960s Elliott Canoge, a linguist with the Summer Institute of Linguistics, came among the Comanches and began the arduous task of recording and documenting the songs of the Comanche people. He punlished his findigs in a Comanche Hymnal, which found its way into Indian curches throughout Comanche Country.

In later years, after Mr. Canonge passed away, his widow was contacted by the COmanche Language and Cultural Preservation Committee. She allowed us to purchase the remaining stock and sell them. Eventually the supply ran out.

At the time we made the decision to publish a song book utilizing our official Comanche alphabet and spelling system. Without the previous work by Elliott Canonge our task would have been much more difficult. For this we will always be indebted to him.

We have included an english translation for each song. As with most work, Comanche songs are no exception in that they can be interpreted different ways by different speakers. While we don't want to take away from each individual's interpretation, our goal is to provide a translation for non-speaking people.

Comanche Songs was developed by the Comanche Language and Culturaly Preservation Committee. We want our beautiful Comanche songs to live forever.
